About Canterbury Counsellor’s training & experience.

I have been a counsellor in the NHS and Hospice sector for over 20 years. Working largely with cancer patients and those with a life-limiting diseases, I have developed a deep understanding of the challenges facing those with a serious or long-term illness.

I have taught extensively on bereavement and loss and have counselled many hundreds of grieving relatives throughout my career. You can find out more about me at Counselling Directory (https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/counsellors/russ-hargreaves).

Whilst much of my counselling work has specialised in cancer, I have also worked extensively with suicide, a range of mental health conditions, sexuality and relationship issues. I currently specialise in working with parents who have lost a baby or child through miscarriage, stillbirth or termination for medical reasons (www.petalscharity.org).

I am a British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Senior Accredited Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor (MBACP Snr Accred). Trained in Integrative Counselling, I draw on my training and experience, using a range of techniques including CBT and Mindfulness.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, I moved my counselling practise entirely online and over the telephone, ensuring that all clients were protected whilst receiving the care they required. Since then, I have returned to counselling in central Canterbury, offering face to face therapy in my private counselling rooms. I offer video sessions using a number of platforms including Zoom, Microsoft Teams and WhatsApp. I can help you to get set up on these systems if you haven’t used them before.

I now also see clients in-person in my therapy room in Central Canterbury. Please view my Location page for details.

As part of my professional registration, I undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) frequently throughout the year. I have done extensive learning on working with couples, LGBTQi+ clients, culture and diversity, trauma, safeguarding both adults and children, Internal Family Systems (IFS), ableism and disablism, eating disorders, anger and aggression , plus working with addiction.

I am trained and accredited Clinical Supervisor which means I also oversee the work of my fellow counsellors and psychotherapists, ensuring that the profession remains as safe as it possibly can be for the benefit of our clients.
