Frequently asked questions.
Do you offer counselling online or face to face?
I offer both. I see lots of clients across the UK and Europe using platforms such as Microsoft TEAMs and WhatsApp. However, I also have Therapy Rooms in Central Canterbury so I can see you in-person if you prefer.
Which type of counselling is better?
The experience is slightly different with these two types of counselling. Face-to-face counselling feels a little more intimate as we can both see each other’s body language and you will see that you have my full attention with no distractions. Online counselling can feel a little more remote, and you need to consider the device you are using, whether you need to hold a phone for an hour for example. It may also help if you can silence your calls and emails for the duration of the session using Focus mode. Online counselling has the advantage of not having to drive to your appointment or having to find parking.
Do I need weekly counselling?
This depends on what is going on in your life and whether it might help to keep the conversation moving by seeing each other weekly. However, I am very aware that this can be costly and time-intensive, so I also see lots of clients on a fortnightly basis. We can discuss this at your first session and you can decide what’s best for you.
Where do I begin?
In our first session, I will try to build a detailed picture of what has brought you to counselling. We may need to delve a little into your family life, work life, friendships. I will want to get a sense of how well supported you are, and whether you might have any health conditions we need to be aware of. I will be curious about how you view yourself and where you believe your problems and difficulties exist.
What do people talk about in counselling?
This depends entirely on you. We will need to develop a relationship in which you feel safe and can trust me enough to begin to tell me some of your deeper thoughts. Often, these will be thoughts and feelings you can’t easily share with family and friends if you have them. You will not be judged and I will do my best to listen to you, to hear your concerns and to formulate a plan of how things might improve in your life.
Do you offer evening appointments?
Yes I do. My last session of the day is between 7pm and 8pm GMT. I work throughout the week, Monday to Friday but I do not offer sessions at weekends.
Do you offer Couples Counselling?
I am not a relationship counsellor. I tend to see individuals in my work. However, I work with lots of couples around baby loss. The focus of this couples counselling is on grief and the loss of a baby or child. We will focus less on your relationship as a couple. There are many reputable orgnaisations that specialise in relationship counselling as well as sex therapy if you require it.
What are your Qualifications?
Like many therapists, I started out studying a Level 4 Diploma in Integrative Counselling. I later went on to study a Level 6 Diploma in Clinical Supervision which enables me to oversee the work of other counsellors and psychotherapists. Every year since graduating, I have studied continuing professional development (CPD) on a whole range of subjects including attachment theory, CBT, compassion focussed therapy, working with LGBTQi+ clients and other diverse groups, working with baby loss, couples and trauma plus many, many more.
